Adam Sterry qualifies sixth in Belgium

Adam Sterry of the F&H Racing Team swept his Kawasaki to sixth place, his best result of the season, in qualification for the Belgian round of the FIM World MX2 Motocross Championship at Lommel.

The Welshman had already signalled his intentions with second fastest time in practice, just a third of a second shy of the defending world champion, and confirmed that pace in the race over twenty minutes plus two laps to decide starting positions for each of tomorrow's two GP motos. He didn't get a clear run through the sweeping first turn but pushed forward to eighth place on the opening lap and made two exciting passes to race onto the rear wheel of the rider in fifth, riding home a solid sixth rather than taking risks with no points on the line today.

Adam Sterry: « It was the most solid day of the season for me so far. I show good speed all day and I was really happy with the second position in the timed practice session; I didn’t got such a good start in the qualifying race but made my way to sixth, not so far from Vlaanderen. To be honest I felt I had a little bit more speed, but I didn’t really see where I could pass him and sixth is OK for a qualifying race; it would have been stupid to take risks and crash and hopefully I can improve my starts tomorrow. I’m just happy to be making advances; the team is doing a great job on the bike and we can work closer together since I moved to the Netherlands three months ago. Sand has always been may favourite; the more difficult the track, the more excited I am."

Sterry's new teammate Marshal Weltin made a solid start to his career with Kawasaki to qualify thirteenth, but Kawasaki riders had little joy in the MXGP class. Crashes cost the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team duo of Clement Desalle and Julien Lieber their chances of a top ten gate-pick, but Desalle eventually came back to thirteenth place in the short qualification race and was joined in the top twenty by Tommy Searle of the Bike It Dixon Racing Team and Alessandro Lupino of Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki.
