Season Best Second For Öncü

Can Öncü (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) took another important step forward in his WorldSSP career path by finishing second in Race Two at the San Juan Villicim circuit, securing a career best result and his second podium of the weekend. A tough second Argentinean race for Philipp Öttl (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) saw him finish 12th.

The start of the second 19-lap race at the 4.276km long Villicum circuit proved to be dramatic as two riders collided and fell entering Turn One, allowing eventual race winner Jules Cluzel and Öncü a clear run out front but holding up most of the others for a few seconds.

With only one target to chase Öncü rode as Cluzel’s shadow for half the race but eventually Can’s pace dropped very slightly and he would end up in a strong second place, just 2.157 seconds from the race win.

Öncü has scored three podiums in 2021; two third places and now this personal best of second place, with one round of the championship to go.

In another tough race for Öttl he would end up 12th, scoring points but unable to replicate the kind of pace that has seen him score seven podiums so far in 2021. He was delayed by the early crash in the pack  and had to take avoiding action, before restarting his fight for points scoring positions.

After the completion of the Argentinean race weekend Öttl is fifth in the championship standings with 241 points, while Öncü is now up to sixth place, with 163.

Another flyaway event, at the Mandalika International Street Circuit in Indonesia, is scheduled to complete the 12 round championship, between 19-21 November.

Can Öncü, stated: “From Friday we were strong here and on Saturday we finished third just because the other two guys were a little bit faster. On Sunday morning Kenan told me I had to do every lap in the low 1’42s, so we did it and we finished second. I tried to follow Jules Cluzel and I had a really good feeling in this race. I am happy to take second and I hope to get on the podium again in Indonesia.”

Philipp Öttl, stated: “I had a good start in Race Two but also a problems with my arm again, like yesterday. I had a good position at the beginning but suddenly there was a crash in front of me and I had to go wide and then I was more or less last. I tried to catch up to the group and it would have been possible but my arm was not able to cope with all the stress. I hope in Indonesia we can make a step in the right direction.”

Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura Kawasaki) was unlucky to retire in the second Villicum race and he is now tenth overall in the championship, with 137 points.

Teenager Jeffrey Buis (G.A.P Motozoo racing By Puccetti Kawasaki), scored points for 15th place in only his second ever WorldSSP race.
