Öncü And Montella Aim For Podium Results

Kawasaki Puccetti Racing team-mates Can Öncü and Yari Montella approach the Argentinian round of the FIM Supersport World Championship at Magny Cours this coming weekend with clear podium goals in mind.

Öncü has earned a place on the podium in Argentina before, not once but twice. He scored a third and then a second place last season when riding for his Kawasaki Puccetti Racing team.

The next stage of progress for Can is to take his first WorldSSP win, having already secured eight career podium finishes. His most recent visit to the post-race prize-giving ceremony was at the previous round in Portugal, where Can went from 14th place on the grid to third in Race Two.

The expansive 4.276km long Villicum circuit near the city of San Juan will be a new experience for 2022 season WorldSSP rookie Montella. He has shown good adaptability so far in this category of racing but is still looking for a first podium finish on his Ninja ZX-6R.

Öncü’s recent run of strong form sees him third in the championship rankings, now an enhanced 17 points ahead of the fourth placed rider.

Montella is eighth in the championship standings currently, tied on the same points total as the rider one place ahead of him.

After the end of the Argentinian round there will be two more combined WorldSBK and WorldSSP weekends. The first will take place at the relatively new circuit of Mandalika in Indonesia between 11-13 November and the final round will unfold at the long-standing Phillip Island circuit in Australia, between 18-20 November.

Can Öncü, stated: “The Portimao podium proves that we can fight for the win each weekend and so I’ll be going all out to battle for the podium in Argentina, with the aim of reaching the top step. I like the track and I finished second and third there last year. So I’d like to score the other podium position, the one I’m yet to achieve. That would be the best way to thank the team and all our sponsors.”

Yari Montella, stated: “I’m interested to see the San Juan track as I’ve not raced there before. I’ll need to learn this new track quickly, but I can also count on the support of my team that has collated a lot of data in past seasons. The two Portimao races left me a little disappointed and so I want to bounce back as quickly as possible and be fighting for the kind of positions the team and I deserve.”

Last season’s WorldSSP300 champion and 2022 WorldSSP rookie Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) arrives in Argentina tenth in the championship fight after nine of the 12 round championship have been completed.

Tom Booth-Amos will ride for the (Motozoo Racing by Puccetti Kawasaki) team at the Villicum round.
